Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Breached Accessory based?

Seattle, WA, USA. Just up the hill from the Space Needle.

How did Breached Accessory start out?

Main Breached Accessory designer, Jody Rodgers, has always had an interest in things graphically designed, although he didn't know in the beginning that's what it was. He's always liked rocking out too, which put him on course for meeting his future wife and Breached Accessory partner, Joann Edmonds-Rodgers, who also likes to rock out, as well as make things and shoot photos.

These two interests of his coincided while in college in Fayetteville, AR when he started making gig posters for bands. Later in Bellingham, WA, he managed a band and made posters for them until the bitter end. After that heartbreaking band break up, he stated something like, "I'm retiring from the music business," which somehow meant he would stop making posters and focus on collage art.

All that changed in the year 2003 when the spectacular Flatstock gig poster convention came to Bumbershoot arts festival in Seattle, WA. Both Jody and Joann were amazed and inspired. As they stood in front of Andrio Abero's 33rpm booth, Joann asked Jody, "Why aren't you doing this?" Jody had no decent reply and thus Breached Accessory was born in that awkward silence.

Why the name Breached Accessory?

Right after that fateful Flatstock, Jody was music shopping and ran across a discounted copy of The Mooney Suzuki's "Electric Sweat" that had it's jewel case completely crushed. The discount sticker said "BREACHED ACCESSORY" and that was that.

Are these posters silk screened?

Nope. It was the intention from the very beginning to silkscreen posters. But after purchasing a digital print from the illustrator and poster maker Tara McPherson that looked nothing like any digital print Jody and Joann had seen, they realized digital printing had come of age. Ms. McPherson was most generous in sharing her knowledge of how to make high quality digital prints.

The Breached Accessory crew doesn't wish to take sides in the debate of digital printing vs. silk screening, or for that matter digital photography vs. film, or vinyl vs. mp3s, etc. They believe both sides have their merits. But, frankly, they have neither the time and space for silk screening posters at the moment, nor the cash to pay somebody to do it.

Are these posters for sale?

Most of them are. See the Purchase Info section for more details.

What do you use to make the posters?

Breached Accessory uses Macs only and finds it highly distressing to even think about having to design on a Windows system. For the most part the layout and digital image manipulation is done in Adobe Photoshop CS2. Some of the graphical elements are created in Adobe Illustrator CS2.

Where does the clip art come from?

Everywhere. Yard sales, flea markets, used books stores, the sidewalk, club floors after shows, and when the word gets out that you are looking for ephemeral items, eventually friends and family start giving clip art as gifts. Nice.

Where do the photos come from?

Joann's photography will sneak it's way into posters. Sometimes they are altered dramatically in Photoshop so even she will not recognize them right away. Check out her photographic world at the photoblog Optically Active.

How is that gallery system made?

Felix Turner from Airtight Interactive makes a great little Flash-based image viewer called SimpleViewer.

Why doesn't this site look right in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6?

For goodness sake, stop using IE right now! Stop reading this and go download Firefox.

Can Breached Accessory make posters for my band?

Maybe. The staff has to discuss it in committee. Email them.

What is up with the new collage gallery?

Jody has been making physical collages for years and has been itching to put some up online. He's a big fan of Joseph Cornell, Shinro Ohtake, and Robert Rauschenberg (to name a few).

How do I give Breached Accessory a shout?

Email them at this address:

The BA crew says: "You're either with us or a spambot, so you got to type that email address out yourself."
